Salt mine, Îles de la Madeleine (Magdalen Islands), Quebec, Canada. Rock salt is mined from an ancient salt dome underlying the islands. In 1983, Mines Seleine began excavating salt at the entrance to the Grosse-Île district at a huge installation unique in North America that tunnels underneath both dune and sea. The mine’s 200 employees annually produce 1 million tons of de-icing road salt for export throughout eastern Canada and the U.S.
